Well, this is a UFO in all sense of the word. I discovered this little project box in my sewing room closet and just stared at it open-mouthed. What had I been planning? There were the makings for flying geese units, some strips in various sizes, a whole lot of black and orange fabrics. No pattern, no notes. What in the world had I been thinking I was going to make with all this?
I started searching through my books and found a super cute pattern that I think will work great for this mystery assortment.
Are you familiar with the Moda All Stars book "Mini Marvels"? It has patterns for 15 little quilts that are full of wonderful design elements. Right there on the cover is a great little quilt that involves flying geese and log cabin blocks. Here is a better picture of the quilt:
The pattern is called Cabin Skein and is by Carrie Nelson. I will have to cut my flying geese and strips down to a smaller size for this project, but that is easily done. This will be such a cute October table topper in those black and orange fabrics! It will finish at about 20" as I recall, just right for a candle or little vignette of some kind.
I have to confess, I got the sixty four 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" flying geese all made and thought "I'll just get cracking on those 4 1/2" log cabin blocks". Wrong. I made two of them and they were so wonky and misshapen I was ashamed. I am so used to using trim tools and special rulers to ensure the accurate size of my blocks that I guess I can't live without them. I have the Creative Grids Log Cabin Trim Tool in both the 8" and the 6" sizes and my blocks always come out perfectly. So, I got on the computer and ordered the 4" size. It should come by Wednesday and I will be back in business.
Sometimes you just need the right tool for the job!
I was just thinking about ordering the log cabin ruler too! I can sew any other block and have it come out perfect but a log cabin block frustrates me every time I make one. Thank goodness we have these kind of tools available to us! Happy sewing with your log blocks!

Glad it worked out for you; this will be another winner for sure.
My husband is on Amazon this morning ordering books for me from your latest reviews!

I love those rulers! I have them all!

What is so hard about making a log cabin, heh?? My blocks always seem to be bigger on one side than the other. I try to make them more precise and I end up with the same results! In my head I blame it on an inaccurate 1/4 inch seam. I said that the next time I make a log cabin, I'll order papers...or maybe I need to try the ruler??
Your quilt will be fabulous, Nicole!

The only problem with a 4" ruler is that the rotary cutter gets mighty close to the hand holding the ruler! But, yes, little pieces get wonky very easily.....I came across Cabin Skein a few days ago and admired it. I still do!

Too funny about this UFO. We all have these, I'm pretty sure. Start something, know what we're doing, put it aside thinking we'll be back to it right away. And then, years later, no recollection of the project at all and certainly not of what it was going to be! Looks like you have a great plan for a "rescue." I look forward to seeing the results.

The 'new' project will be a nice addition to your Halloween collection! I'm guessing that one of these days when it's finished you'll see a pattern that reminds you what you had originally intended to do with that fabric! Have a great week! Stay well!

a 4" Log Cabin block? YOU.ARE.CRAZY. Okay, it is going to look adorable but that is tiny! ;p
Yes, I have found fabric and blocks and wondered what the heck was I making? I have also gone crazy looking for books or patterns that I KNOW I have somewhere only to find them in containers with the fabric pulled and ready to go. Oy. Quilting is such a crazy hobby.

I can totally relate to this kind of "find" but no memory of it!
Aren't we interesting folks?!? LOL

I like the log cabin trim ruler too, especially for small blocks.

Is there a pool for guessing how many days after this cute new project is done until you discover what you had planned? As one of my teachers used to say, "I laugh with you." because I am sure it's just a matter of time until I find one of these.

So glad that I am not the only one who can not remember what I was planning.

I made Cabin Skein and love it! I made it in similar colors to the original because I loved it so much! Can't wait to see your color interpretation of it.
